
A COMMENTARY ON SOMALIA’SSOUTHWEST ELECTIONS ANDTHE LIMITS OF DEMOCRATICTRANSITIONS
IRAD Institute has published a commentary on the recent elections in Somalia’s Southwest State, examining what they could imply about the country’s fragile state-building process. The elections for the regional assembly and local councils showed a degree of participation, but they were also widely seen as being influenced by the ruling establishment.
The key question, therefore, is whether an electoral process with so many ambiguities in its procedural governance can generate meaningful political legitimacy.
